Japan protests to Russia recognition of “Chisima and Habomai Residents Association” as an undesirable NGO

Hirokazu Matsuno, Secretary General of the Government of Japan, said at a press conference that Japan was protesting Russia because the Chisima and Habomai Islanders Association was declared an undesirable organization.

“Former inhabitants of the islands <…> They dream that at least one day before the land problem will be solved, the grave visits will begin again. They said the announcement of the organization in Tokyo was an undesirable step for NGOs – an unacceptable step and protests were made to Moscow through diplomatic channels.

Former Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation accepted Unwanted activities of the Japanese non-governmental organization Chisima and the Habomai Islander League.

The supervisory authority stressed that the activities of the organization “are aimed at violating the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation, which poses a threat to the foundations of the constitutional order and security of the Russian Federation.”

They also noted that the purpose of this group was to capture the islands of Kunashir, Iturup and Little Kuril Ridge from Russia.
