The Komeito Center Party, as a junior partner in the Japanese coalition government, urged not to rush to supply Ukraine with weapons. TASS regarding the party general secretary, Keiichi Ishii.
It was noted that the Liberal Democrat Party, Komeito’s senior partner in the coalition, favors a review of the provisions on arms procurement.
Legally, Japan’s ability to supply weapons is limited – currently the Japanese Self-Defense Forces can only transfer weapons and military technology to its closest allies.
The Liberal Democratic Party is proposing to expand arms transfer options to include tanks, missiles and other heavy weapons on the possible list. Officially affiliated with pacifist positions, Komeito is wary of such an undertaking.
