The European Commission has understood the situation and the scale of the problem faced by Poland and other member states, Andrzej Sadoś, Poland’s permanent representative to the EU, told journalists in Brussels on Wednesday after European Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis’ video conference with the trade ministers of five countries whose leaders have signed a letter to the European Commission on Ukrainian agricultural products.
We still have some work to do. The Commission has made some proposals. These proposals need to be examined. These are proposals related to agricultural, trade and infrastructure policies, because let’s not forget that one of the aspects of the discussion is the question of expanding border or railway infrastructure, namely to make more efficient transport and export of Ukrainian agricultural products to third countries
– said Andrzej Sados.
The European Commission understood the situation and the scale of the problem facing Poland and other Member States and took action. Discussions will continue, which means that what the Commission is currently proposing is not considered sufficient. However, there is a common position of all ministers participating in the meeting, President Valdis Dombrovskis, Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski, that we should continue these talks
– added the Polish diplomat.
As he noted, the EC’s preliminary assessment is that the problems “have been signaled since July last year by the countries bordering Ukraine. and which were regularly discussed at the meetings of agriculture ministers and finally last were included in the letter of late March, initiated by the Polish Prime Minister, must be taken very urgently.
The next round of talks will take place next Tuesday during a meeting of agriculture ministers in Luxembourg.
Statement by the EU Commissioners on agricultural imports from Ukraine
In the case of the problem of imports of Ukrainian agricultural products, it is crucial to quickly adopt a common EU approach instead of using unilateral solutions – we read in a joint statement by EC Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis and EU Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski after a video conference with representatives of five Member States bordering Ukraine.
Today we met representatives of five Member States bordering Ukraine – Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Romania – as well as Ukraine itself. We have put forward comprehensive EU proposals in response to the concerns of these five Member States about the deterioration of the situation of EU producers of certain products. The package proposed by the Commission includes a second tranche of financial support for affected farmers, exceptional protection measures for key products and measures to facilitate the transit of Ukrainian grain exports through solidarity routes
– we read in the communiqué.
The package proposed by the Commission is conditional on Member States lifting their unilateral measures. We underlined the importance of quickly adopting a common EU approach rather than unilateral solutions to avoid multiple bans and solutions endangering the internal market
– reserved for the authors of the statement.
The Commission took note of the views of the participants. We have agreed to continue our political consultations in the coming days in order to reach a swift solution
the commissioners announced.
