Meeting with President Duda
At noon, the German President, together with the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, and the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, will participate in the main celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which will take place at pl. Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto.
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising began on April 19, 1943. It was the first urban uprising against the Germans in occupied Europe, an act of a symbolic nature given the slim chance of success. In an unequal battle that lasted almost a month, the poorly armed fighters of the Jewish Combat Organization and the Jewish Military Union opposed SS, Wehrmacht, security police and auxiliary formations. During that time, the Germans razed the ghetto to the ground and methodically burned down house after house. On May 8, 1943, in an air raid shelter at ul. Miła 18, the leader of the uprising, Mordechaj Anielewicz, committed suicide along with a group of several dozen fighters. Few insurgents managed to escape the burning ghetto through the sewers.
