We are grateful to the EU Member States bordering Ukraine for their help in exporting agricultural products; we are aware that this affects farmers there – admitted on Monday European Commission spokeswoman for Agriculture Miriam Garcia Ferrer, answering questions about the ban on imports of grains and other agricultural products from Ukraine introduced over the weekend, among others by Poland and Hungary.
“Unilateral action is not possible”
We are in contact with the relevant authorities of the EU countries announcing these measures, as well as with the authorities of Ukraine to understand the scope of the measures and the legal basis. We are not completely clear on this point. At the same time, it is worth recalling that trade policy is an exclusive competence of the EU, which means that decisions must be taken at EU level. Therefore, we reiterate that unilateral action is not possible in this context
Garcia Ferrer said this at a press conference in Brussels.
It is very important to continue to support Ukraine in these difficult times, but at the same time we are aware that EU farmers are being affected. (…) We are very grateful to the frontline countries for supporting Ukraine in the export of agricultural products
she added.
