Any responsible government should make such a decision to protect its producers, its farmers and its market, PiS MP Radosław Fogiel said in the PAP Studio, referring to Poland’s ban on food imports from Ukraine.
Government spokesman Piotr Müller said in an interview with PAP on Sunday that Poland is in contact with the EC regarding the government’s decision to ban imports, including transit, of agri-food products from Ukraine.
This decision is possible because of the safety clause
Mueller emphasized.
A new dispute with the EU?
Earlier, spokeswoman for the European Commission for Economic Affairs, Arianna Podesta, said that “trade policy is an exclusive competence of the EU, so unilateral action is unacceptable.”
Asked in the PAP Studio, Fogiel was asked if the decision to ban imports from Ukraine without an agreement with the EC “opens a new front” on the Warsaw-Bruksela line, he stated that “it doesn’t open a front at all”.
These are actions that have not been taken against anyone, and it should be clearly emphasized that these are not actions against Ukraine. Ukraine has our support and we realize how important it is that it wins the war. But these are measures that any responsible government should take to protect its producers, its farmers and its market
– he said.
The head of the parliament’s foreign affairs committee pointed out that, in his view, EU law allows member states to make such decisions in various situations, “including those related to security”.
I hope that the European Commission, instead of looking for reasons to open a new front and that bad people can accuse the Commission of wanting to exacerbate the crisis in Poland, in the hope that the government that well-disposed will not be able to cope with them and that the government more favorable to the commissioners (government) will take power in the autumn. Of course not, I do not suspect the Commission of such calculated actions
he said.
“Strong treaty bases”
Fogiel noted that he hoped Poland’s decision would provide an impetus for “the Commission to cooperate in the interests of Member States”. He added that it is not only Poland, but Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Hungary are also in a similar situation.
When asked whether the government is not afraid of the unfavorable ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union on the import and transit ban of agri-food products from Ukraine, Fogiel stated that Poland has strong treaty grounds for such an action.
Government spokesman Piotr Muller says we can make such decisions and will defend those decisions if necessary. I hope that, as I said, the Commission will understand the situation and will not use it for wars with the Member States, but will really accept that its role is to support the Member States
– he said.
