Saakashvili received the annual Promethean Prize on Wednesday as part of the Promethean Prize Forum. President Lech Kaczyński, hosted by the portal Niezalezna.pl.
On behalf of the imprisoned laureate, the prize was received in Warsaw by his mother – Giulia Alasani.
Mikheil Saakashvili in a Georgian prison
Saakashvili was the president of Georgia in 2004-2007 and 2008-2013. During his presidency, he faced the Russian invasion of the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He was seen as a pro-Western politician and he wanted Georgia to join NATO.
Saakashvili was unable to receive the award in person because he is still in a Georgian prison. He was detained in October 2021 when he returned to Georgia from exile after eight years. In 2018, a Georgian court sentenced him in absentia to six years in prison for abuse of power in the performance of his duties. Saakashvili himself denies these allegations and considers them politically motivated.
In November 2021, Saakashvili was transferred to a prison hospital following a hunger strike and reports that his health was deteriorating, raising fears for his life. In a December 2022 report by the Georgian NGO Empathy, which works on the rehabilitation of torture victims, Saakashvili was diagnosed with more than 20 ailments – 10 of them serious – and stated that his health condition would not allow him to remain in prison .
Despite these circumstances, on February 6, 2022, a Tbilisi District Court judge rejected Saakashvili’s request for release or postponement of sentence on health grounds. The former president himself has repeatedly asked to be allowed to travel abroad to receive appropriate treatment. They expressed their willingness to accept Polish authorities.
The Intermarium Prize is called the Promethean Prize. President Lech Kaczyński was established to appreciate the activities in the diplomatic field, aimed at the integration and development of countries between the Baltic, Black and Adriatic Seas. This is the first edition of this award.
