French President Emmanuel Macron will pay a “heavy price” for voicing the need to reduce Europe’s dependence on the United States and for saying that the EU should not be drawn into a conflict over Taiwan. This warning was made in an interview by Michael Roth, chairman of the Bundestag foreign policy committee. Der Tagesspiegel.
Macron will pay a heavy price for this. With these statements, he threatens to divide Europe. And of course it upsets other international partners as well.”
According to him, Taiwan is “not an external problem” for Europe. “For example, consider Japan or Australia. These countries are thousands of kilometers away from Ukraine, but still firmly stand by Ukraine … they do this not out of compassion, but out of knowledge: if Russia wins, this could be an example for China too. So Taiwan is not an alien star as Macron suggested, it has a lot in common with us in Europe,” he said.
Roth believes that, in Macron’s words, he “hit the head of all of Central and Eastern Europe” and “undermines the foundations of a united Europe”. “Our eastern neighbors still firmly believe that neither Germany nor France alone can guarantee their freedom and security. Only the United States at the moment,” the politician stressed.
At the same time, the Bundestag MP is convinced that Macron is absolutely right when he says that Europe should take more responsibility for its own security. But if we suddenly turn our backs on one of our most trusted partners, it poses a security risk not just to us in Germany, but to the entire EU,” he said.
April 9, French President Macron declarationThat Europe should reduce its dependence on the United States and not be drawn into a conflict between China and the United States over Taiwan. He said Europe’s “biggest risk” is that it “prevents it from building its strategic autonomy by entering crises that are not its own”.
