Although people between the ages of 18 and 30 become a smaller and smaller group of voters every year, and the prevailing stereotype shows that seniors are more likely to vote for PiS, while young people are more likely to vote for opposition parties, according to an interesting study by Centrum Badań Marketingowych Indicator and the Adenauer Foundation, which shows that PiS also enjoys the most support in this age group. There is also interest in the Confederation among the youngest voters.
PiS, KO and Konfederacja are leaders
If the balance of power in the Sejm depended solely on young voters between the ages of 18 and 30, the largest political forces would be PiS (27 percent), the Civic Coalition (24.7 percent) and the Confederation (19.2 percent), according to ” A political portrait of young Poland”
— writes Wirtualna Polska, who published the survey results.
“A political portrait of young Poles” shows that 72.2 percent would like to participate in the October elections. people in the 18-30 age group.
Although the Poles aged 18 to 30 form an increasingly smaller group of voters every year – today 4.66 million people, or 14.9 percent. of the total adult population (for comparison, people over 65 make up 25.1 percent of eligible voters) – their declared participation in the next parliamentary elections is 72.2 percent. should encourage an effort to understand their views and electoral attitudes
point out the study authors.
As we further learn, the vast majority (61.2%) of the youngest voters do not define their opinion according to the division of left or right. 18 to 30 year olds tend to describe them as unspecified or place them off scale. At the same time 71.2 percent. of respondents estimate that the life prospects of young people in Poland have deteriorated over the past eight years, as evidenced by housing situation, among other things. According to the study’s authors, four years ago, 27.7% of respondents reported living with their parents. young people, and now this percentage has risen by almost 10 percentage points. that is 37.2 percent.
At the same time, the currently ruling Law and Justice party can count on the most support from this group of respondents, which was indicated by 27 percent. voters in the 18-30 age group. The second place was taken by the Civic Coalition with support at the level of 24.7 percent. The podium was closed by Konfederacja, on which 19.2 percent want to vote. respondents. The result of this group exceeds the results of studies that take all age groups into account.
Further positions belong to the Left Together (14.1 percent) and the still informal PSL-Poland 2050 coalition (9.6 percent). 1.7 percent want to support another electoral committee, while 3.7 percent. respondents did not want to answer.
Will there be a repeat of 2019?
As the authors of the study point out, a similar poll was conducted in Ipsos four years ago, after the parliamentary elections.
In 2019, among young voters, 26.3% of voters voted for PiS, 24.3% for Civic Coalition, 19.7% for Konfederacja, 18.4% for SLD and 9.7% for PSL percentage”. These results confirmed the support expressed by young people in our pre-election survey
– emphasized, referring to the late poll.
A whopping 81.2 percent. representatives of the 18-30 age group vote for the candidates and groups they support. Others opt for the “lesser evil”, and the main motivation to vote for them is a critical assessment of the ruling politicians, and on the other hand the desire to support a particular party (the first option was indicated by 31.3 percent , the second – 18.3 percent).
Why don’t young people vote?
As for the reasons for reluctance to participate in the autumn elections, the main ones in the cited study are: lack of interest in politics (17.2%), the belief that politicians are guided only by their own needs (14, 2%), also a general feeling of unwillingness towards politicians (13.4%). How can you encourage 18 to 30 year olds to vote? For example, promises to improve their economic situation (27.4%), postulates about Poland’s military security (14.9%), as well as the implementation of a specific model of energy and climate policy (14.3%).
Furthermore, we learn that young Poles prefer to learn about politics, mainly through social media, which was indicated by 29.3 percent of the respondents. respondents, internet information services (27.7%) and family and friends (194%). The priority palm among social media is in the hands of Facebook and Twitter.
10.6% of the respondents get information mainly from television. respondents, from the radio – 5%, 1.8% from the press, while from the church – 1.1 percent.
How do young Poles think?
Also interesting are the views of young people on socio-economic issues that heat up the public debate, such as the liberalization of the abortion law or Poland’s accession to the eurozone.
The study authors also reveal how young voters feel about important socio-economic issues that are often discussed in public spaces. The distance to the liberalization of the abortion law or the reluctance to the euro can be surprising. And so, for example, 59.8 percent. does not agree with the postulate of liberalization of the abortion law (interestingly, although the target group of the protests against the tightening of the abortion law are women, as many as 63.3% of women and 56.7% of men are against the liberalization of the right to kill an unborn child). The vast majority, a whopping 74 percent, oppose the liquidation of the 500 Plus program. The majority of young people (85.9%) have a positive assessment of increasing defense expenditure, among other things.
The survey was conducted on March 13-30, 2023 using the method of computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI) by the INDICATOR Center for Marketing Research. The measurement was performed on a national, representative sample of N=1200 people aged 18-30.
