After Easter, the opposition will resume talks on the Senate pact. The leaders of PO, Left, PSL and Poland 2050 must – based on April’s polls – decide which constituencies to fill for individual groups.
Bogdan Zdrojewski, senator from the citizens’ coalition, when asked about the next meeting under the Senate’s pact, told the PAP that “final consultations on individual constituencies and specific candidates running in them will begin after the Easter period .”
Zdrojewski stressed that in the case of the current sitting opposition senators who “declared their willingness to continue their mission in the Senate, approval has been obtained and it is known that these people will run.”
On the other hand, in the remaining constituencies during the holiday period, responsibilities and powers will be divided within specific opposition political formations, which will have the right to nominate their candidates.
When asked about the method of settling disputes in the selection of a candidate in a particular constituency, Senator KO indicated that in such cases “the probability of a particular candidate for a good result will be decisive”. As he added, “this can be done in a variety of ways, including polling.”
MP Dariusz Wieczorek, who is holding talks on the Senate pact on behalf of the Left club, told PAP that the meeting will be held on the occasion of the Sejm session starting Wednesday.
Based on the April polls, we will make a quantitative division of districts into individual parties. It’s about 65 constituencies that we selected after our research as those where we have 70 to 30 percent support a united opposition to PiS
– he said.
“Candidates for Candidates”
When asked when we would know the names of “candidates for candidates”, Wieczorek replied that opposition groups would talk about it in April.
Each of the parties has already reported which constituencies they are interested in, so we have a map of 100 constituencies and we know which party wants to place its candidate where
– he said.
The agreement is that in 35 constituencies outside these 65, there – regardless of party membership – we will elect the candidate who has the most support
– emphasized the politician from the left.
The first senate pact was concluded before the parliamentary elections in 2019 by the main opposition groups – Civic Coalition, PSL and the left. Although it was not strictly enforced everywhere (for example in Łódź, former PO politician Krzysztof Kwiatkowski ran as an independent candidate and defeated the candidate of the left, Małgorzata Niewiadomska-Cudak), there were also constituencies where, for example, candidates from the PSL and the Left competed ), thanks to him, the opposition collectively won at least the Senate elections, although Law and Justice won the Sejm elections.
