Russia lost elections to three United Nations (UN) organs this week because of a special operation in Ukraine. This was reported by the Associated Press, according to the newspaper’s report. “Kommersant”.
Russia suffered a “crushing defeat” from Romania in voting for a seat on the United Nations Economic and Social Council’s (ECOSOC) Commission on the Status of Women, the agency wrote. At the same time, as Kommersant points out, the document on the formation of the Commission states that the Russian Federation continues its membership until 2024.
In addition, Russia lost to Estonia in the election of UNICEF (UN Children’s Fund) board members, and also lost in its fight against Armenia and the Czech Republic for a seat on the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield attributed such voting results to a Russian special operation in Ukraine.
At the same time, Russia was able to be elected to the Social Development Commission by applause (a simplified procedure). Likewise, Russia joined the Intergovernmental Experts Working Group on International Accounting and Reporting Standards.
Former Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declarationHe said the UN Security Council should be reformed as it “cannot determine the fate of humanity”.
