NATO will deploy more troops, not just in the Baltic area, but on the eastern flank as a whole, from Finland to Bulgaria. This was expressed by Latvian President Egils Levits in an interview with Deutsche Welle (the organization is included in the list of foreign agents by the Ministry of Justice).
“At the NATO summit in the summer of 2022, we agreed to strengthen the eastern flank of the alliance. Military potential should be increased. And we will have more NATO troops, not just in the Baltic region, but on the eastern flank of NATO as a whole,” he said.
According to the Latvian President, “investments in military potential today are also investments in peacekeeping in Europe.”
Levits also supported the idea of permanent bases of NATO forces in the Baltic states instead of the current rotation principle. “Building a permanent base is also part of strengthening NATO’s eastern flank. It’s not a question of tomorrow, but it’s a process, and as a result, after a while, we will have more NATO troops on the entire eastern flank, from Finland to Bulgaria, ”he concluded.
Formerly Lithuania and Germany reached Agreements on the need to strengthen the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance, which includes the deployment of additional air defense systems and fighters.
Also, Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas asked His German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, will permanently deploy FRG troops in the country.
At the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Secretariat declarationNATO’s capacity building work in the Black Sea, Baltics and Poland is unprecedented.
