US Congress House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy has criticized Chinese officials for accusing Washington of violating the “one China” principle on the backdrop of meetings between US politicians and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. transmits Fox News. In his opinion, he negotiated well with him on American soil, and Beijing should not specify who can meet and who cannot.

“China can never tell us what to do. As Speaker of the House of Representatives, I will meet with anyone we want to meet, any representative of any country,” McCarthy said.

As a US House of Representatives spokesperson pointed out, Washington signed six “guarantees” with Taipei under President Ronald Reagan. He also added that his meeting with Tsai Ing-wen was “unifying and bipartisan.”

“Republicans and Democrats here are saying unanimously that we need to step up arms sales to Taiwan,” McCarthy said.

The issue of Taiwan’s status is one of the most painful for Beijing. Although most of the world’s states adhere to the “one China” policy, Taiwan or the Republic of China has been a de facto independent state since the war ended in 1949. Beijing views Taiwan as an integral part of the PRC and criticizes unauthorized contacts with Taipei.

Previously, Chinese President Xi Jinping will not compromise and concessions on Taiwan.
