The French National Assembly (lower house of parliament) will not consider at a public hearing a petition to disband the French police special unit BRAV-M (Motorized Brigades for Suppressing Acts of Violence) following a series of complaints about abuse of power by its employees during the suppression of the riots. It has been reported TASS.
The petition, which was published on the website of the French National Assembly between March 23 and April 5, collected approximately 263.8 thousand signatures. This is a record figure for such proposals.
Many of those who took part in the discussion about the petition expressed the view that it was aimed at “discrediting” the police.
“The image of BRAV-M depicted in the petition appears to be caricatured in many ways,” said Eric Pullia, a pro-presidential Renaissance Party lawmaker appointed as rapporteur for the document.
He also expressed regret that the proposal had to be rejected, but said he could not support it because there were too many politicized cliches, such as the call to “stop the massacre” in the end.
Earlier, on the day of the general strike, thousands of French appeared in anti-retirement reform demonstrations across the country. There were many clashes between the demonstrators and the police.
