“I ask everyone, I appeal to everyone: even if you have a different opinion, don’t do it. I absolutely do not like such behavior as in Łódź and I will always condemn such behavior,” said Tomasz Trela, a member of parliament from the left, referring to the destruction of the statue of St. John Paul II. At the same time, he did not deny that this act was the result of his club friends’ slogans calling for “dejanie pawlania” of public space.
“dejaniepavlana”
Asked by Katarzyna Gójska, the broadcast’s host, about the relationship between the devastation and his political camp’s slogans about “dejaniepawlan” of public space, MP Trela did not deny that such a relationship exists.
This is not the position of the left
– he assured, referring directly to the aspirations of the left that not only Jana Pawła II Street would disappear from Polish streets, but also from public spaces, eg schools and other institutions named after John Paul II.
“This is the official position of the left
The parliamentary caucus and the New Left have a clear position on this. The naming of streets, museums, schools, various institutions belongs to the organizer of these institutions […] And so it should be in this case
– he stated during the conversation about ideas for “dejaniepawlanie” of Poland and immediately gave an example that the local government or school community should decide who will be the patron of the school, and not this or that government or party. Even if the choice falls on John Paul II.
I understand that some of my colleagues’ statements were quite emotional at first, but we discussed it later in the relevant political bodies and made this decision. This is the official position of the left on this issue
– repeated MP Trela.
