AP: German opposition to seek parliamentary inquiry in ‘Scholz-Warburg case’

Representatives of the conservative Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), currently in opposition, intend to launch a parliamentary investigation into German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is suspected of giving preference to Warburg Bank for tax evasion. Matthias Middelberg, vice-president of the CDU’s faction in the Bundestag, said: “This investigation aims to clarify a number of unresolved issues in the Scholz-Warburg case.

Speaking about the upcoming investigation, conservative Matthias Hauer, member of the Bundestag Finance Committee, added that there are many open questions and contradictions and inconsistencies.

The CDU said it plans to set up a special financial commission to deal with this investigation after lawmakers return from recess. For this, a quarter of the deputies need a vote, and the CDU received 197 votes out of 736.

We’re talking about Scholz’s career as mayor of Hamburg from 2011 to 2018. The politician held meetings with the special Warburg Bank representative. Scholz is suspected of helping the bank evade about 50m euros in taxes.

An investigation is currently underway in the Hamburg Legislature. Scholz says he’s innocent.
