Russian Presidential Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Brazilian Presidential International Relations Advisor Celso Amorim and confirmed the invitation of the Brazilian side, including President Lula da Silva, to visit Russia.

“I can really say that there was such a conversation,” Peskov said.

He also noted that at this meeting “the Brazilian side renewed and approved the invitation to visit Russia.”

The previous day, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the decree on holding a summit of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) in 2024 in Kazan. The President also instructed the creation of an organizing committee to prepare and ensure Russia’s presidency of the association in 2024. Putin appointed his deputy Yuri Ushakov as head of the organizing committee.

In 2023, the BRICS summit will be held in South Africa. In 2006, Brazil, Russia, India and China formed the BRIC group. South Africa joined in 2011, transforming it into the BRICS. South Africa chairs the BRICS for the third time.
