“Trying to gain support by instilling fear is not only short-sighted and ineffective, but above all unfair to those who take politicians’ words seriously, argues Jan Radomski in Gazeta Wyborcza. Will his editorial colleagues understand this, who like to scare with the alleged coalition of PiS and the Confederation, Polexit or proclaim that “Russia is already here”, when there are well over a million Ukrainian refugees in our country?
“People really remember what you say to them and learn from it.”
It should have been so beautiful! It seemed that the right-wing government was so weak that the opposition raced down the highway to victory. Today, however, the mood of the opposition is gloomy. What happened?
– asks the columnist of “Gazeta Wyborcza”, citing the parable of a shepherd boy shouting “Wolves!” many times. cried, though there was no reason to. The villagers initially came in droves to help, but over time they grew tired of it and it’s not hard to guess what happened when one day the wolves actually came.
This mechanism is regularly repeated by the opposition, not understanding that people really remember what they are told and draw conclusions from it. Every word of politicians that is not translated into reality makes the opposition lose credibility
Radomsky writes.
How was the opposition threatened?
Among the “opposition fears in Lachy” he cites screams, which have been going on since 2015, that the social programs introduced by the United Right government will ruin the state budget. The journalist from “Gazeta Wyborcza” points out that such arguments were irrational from the very beginning for anyone with even basic knowledge in the field of economics.
What would actually be an economic collapse would be much less palpable to the average person than in the nightmarish visions of opposition politicians
– Jan Radomski convinces.
Then there was the parliamentary crisis of December 2016.
It started with a scandalous government idea of limiting the presence of journalists in parliament, and ended with a vote on the budget in Column Hall, where politicians from the Liberal opposition (there was no other in the Sejm) time) is considered invalid. I remember very well that at that time the main line of the opposition was the story that after what happened, the legality of the budget could be questioned, and as a result, Polish men and women could have problems with funding of many everyday aspects of life. and in the case of the budget even with receiving salaries
– recalls the publicist, who, as he adds, considered these events an “important moment for the opposition”, which was able to verify the scenarios drawn by it. However, PiS won the 2019 parliamentary election, marking the United Right government’s second term in office.
Jan Radomski also mentions, among other things, reforms of the judiciary, which were supposed to lead to the expulsion of Poland from the European Union, but that did not happen, or the liquidation of lower secondary schools, which would ruin Polish education, but also this scenario failed.
This does not mean that these ideas are good – on the contrary! – but their hysterical criticism backfires
– convinces the journalist.
Tusk’s fears
As Radomski continues, in the fall Donald Tusk tried to frighten the Poles with the vision of millions of people who are “afraid of winter, darkness and cold” and “people whom PiS condemns to buy bricks and clay painted black”.
Meanwhile it is spring and that turned out to be not too bad. There was enough coal and the price stabilized
– points out the columnist, who expresses surprise that an experienced politician like Donald Tusk “easily fell right into this trap.”
After all, he probably couldn’t imagine that the government wouldn’t do everything it could to ensure energy security a few months before the elections. From the beginning it was known that the stories about the lack of coal were greatly exaggerated. And if you lose your credibility on one point, you’ll lose your credibility on other points as well
– indicates.
Trying to gain support by instilling fear is not only short-sighted and ineffective, but above all it is not fair to those who take the words of politicians and politicians seriously
writes the journalist.
While Radomski describes the PiS government as “utterly incompetent in exceptionally many ways”, he also points out that voters need more factual criticism of his performance and an alternative presentation, “no more moss and fern stories about the fact that if Jarosław Kaczyński wins elections, the world will end.
“It’s not worth rushing to the rescue when the opposition shouts ‘Wolves!’ screams.”
According to the publicist, it is not surprising that the polls are not very favorable to the liberal opposition.
Unfortunately, the opposition does not stop there. He threatens inflation at every step, although the continuation of this story will be similar: when inflation falls – and it will, most likely before the autumn elections – people will breathe a sigh of relief, and the opposition’s dramatic narratives will only work against
– emphasizes the author of the text in “GW”.
Finally, Jan Radomski comments on the “fear” that has recently returned to PO leader Donald Tusk’s favor, namely “Polexit”.
A few days ago, Donald Tusk declared that Law and Justice intends to take Poland out of the European Union, and that the stakes of the upcoming elections are whether our country will be condemned to loneliness. I don’t want to check, but I am sure that even if the right wing is back in power, we will still be in the European Union four years from now. However, Tusk’s words to society will be another example that it is not worth coming to the rescue if the opposition shouts again: “Wolves!”
he concludes.
In all of this, the hardest part is the electorate of the Civic Coalition and Donald Tusk. After the successive “bogeys” it is clear that this is a group that does not have the best opinion of their intellectual level, and certainly not their understanding of politics.
