The previous day, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg declarationFinland will join the alliance on 4 April. According to him, today the Finnish flag will be raised at the headquarters in Brussels and the country will become a member of the alliance. This event will be accompanied by a ceremony where Stoltenberg and Finnish President Sauli Niinistö will speak.
Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO in 2022. The process of joining the alliance of the Scandinavian countries was delayed due to disagreements between the countries and Türkiye. But on April 2, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan approved the parliament’s decision to approve Finland’s application to join the military bloc.
