A visit to Warsaw is a signal that President Volodymyr Zelensky is determined that Ukraine wants to join the EU and NATO, says former Polish ambassador to Kiev Jan Piekło. According to him, it may also turn out that this visit will be an introduction to the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the territories occupied by Russia.
Marcin Przydacz, head of the Presidential Office of International Policy, briefed on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Poland scheduled for Wednesday; The President of Ukraine will meet President Andrzej Duda, he will also talk with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and meet Poles and Ukrainians living in Poland at the Royal Castle in Warsaw.
This is indeed a unique visit
– Jan Piekło told PAP.
According to him, this is “a signal to the world that President Zelensky is determined that Ukraine wants to join the European Union, NATO and be part of the common political space.”
According to the former Polish ambassador to Ukraine, President Zelensky’s visit may also “be an introduction to the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the occupied territories, and it could turn out that this visit coincides with the beginning of this counter-offensive”.
A symbolic visit
Jan Piekło noted that the date of the visit coincides with the anniversary of Vladimir Putin’s strategic failures.
We remember President Putin’s order that the entire Donbas should be in Russian hands by the end of March. It didn’t. This is another defeat after the first defeat of the three-day blitzkrieg war, which did not result in the capture of Kiev
said the former ambassador.
This is a key moment in the history of the war in Ukraine, hence the high expectations of this visit
– said Piekło, adding that “maybe there will be words that may come as a surprise to some”.
Asked about the expected topics of discussion between Presidents Duda and Zelenskiy, the former Polish ambassador to Ukraine pointed out that apart from the announced topics on e.g. “Ukraine’s EU and NATO membership”, “military support”, “historical issues” or “the question of Ukrainian grain”, also expects “public announcement of some kind of surprise of a political nature”.
When asked what such a statement might relate to, Piekło replied that “it may concern the issue of joint economic enterprises, including those of a military nature.”
