The IOC’s decision on players from Russia and Belarus is outrageous, and instead of lecturing the prime ministers of countries who know more about Russia than he does, the chairman of the committee should consider whether he wants to join the long line of the Kremlin, Radosław Fogiel, head of the parliamentary foreign affairs committee, told PAP (PIS).
International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said the criticism from the governments of some European countries of the decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to return to international competition “is regrettable and violates the autonomy of the sport” .
It is regrettable that some governments are unwilling to respect the majority in the Olympic movement and all stakeholders and the autonomy of the sport.
Bach said at a press conference at the end of the IOC board meeting in Lausanne.
It is also sad that these governments are not addressing the problem of double standards. We have not seen any comment about their attitude towards the participation of athletes from countries involved in 70 other wars and armed conflicts around the world
– added.
According to Fogel, the head of the IOC “rather than lecture prime ministers on countries that know much more about Russia and Russian crimes than he does, should consider joining the long line of representatives of Western Europe who Kremlin.”
Attempts to whitewash Russia’s barbaric aggression and present it as one of many conflicts come straight out of Russian propaganda books.
– emphasized the PiS politician.
At the same time, he added that the decision of the IOC regarding athletes from Russia and Belarus is outrageous.
Many Ukrainian athletes have died or are serving in the army fighting for the independence and sovereignty of their homeland and will not participate in the Games, and representatives of the torture state will participate in them? Should we all pretend nothing is happening?
said the PiS politician.
There is no permission from our side for this type of activity
Fogel emphasized.
Re-enrolment of players
On Tuesday, the IOC made recommendations to international sports federations regarding the re-admission of athletes from Russia and Belarus to international competitions, while introducing a number of conditions for these athletes to meet.
This includes performances under a neutral flag, it also only concerns individual starts and only those participants who do not support the war in Ukraine in any way and have no ties to the army or military clubs.
The provisions of the IOC do not apply to the Paris Olympics in 2024 – a separate decision will be made at a later date.
