WSJ: Egypt, Syria on track to re-establish diplomatic relations

The newspaper reported that Egypt and Syria have made progress in re-establishing diplomatic relations. The Wall Street Gazette.

According to the publication, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad may meet in April after the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan – ending on April 20 this year.

It was noted that Faisal Mikdad, Head of the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, paid a working visit to the Egyptian capital on Saturday, April 1, for the first time since the spring of 2011. The meeting was formal – bilateral relations issues were discussed with Egyptian counterparts – and the restoration of Syria’s membership in the League of Arab States (LAS) was also discussed.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri visited Türkiye and Syria in early February 2023.

Sameh Shukri’s visit coincides with the visit of Hanafi al-Gebali, Speaker of the African state’s House of Representatives, to Damascus, whose aim is to organize the 34th conference of the Arab Parliamentary Union.
