It was noted that Cornwell was detained for possession of illegal weapons in a safe at his home – although his family claims he was granted a license for the guns.

“We are making every effort to ensure that British citizens detained in Afghanistan have access to the consulate and we support their families,” the British Foreign Office said in a statement.

Earlier, Taliban supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundzada instructed courts in Afghanistan to impose sentences under Sharia law for a range of crimes, including amputation, public flogging, and in some cases, stoning.
