“If there are discussions about the program, then it is a substantive conversation. But in this situation we are only talking about personalities, such a conjecture. And yet, with all due respect, this is not a beauty pageant. We are talking about who will rule Poland for the next four years and make decisions on fundamental issues such as strengthening the Polish army,” Law and Justice MP Piotr Król told the wPolityce.pl portal.
wPolityce.pl: PiS spokesperson Rafał Bochenek suggested that the Civic Coalition might consider replacing Donald Tusk with Rafał Trzaskowski as a candidate for prime minister. Szymon Hołownia, for example, speaks in a similar tone. How do you rate this kind of speculation?
Peter King: It seems to me that such a maneuver with Trzaskowski has already been practiced once, in the presidential elections. Who knows if something is wrong. Obviously he was very nervous.
This survey, commissioned by one of the opposition circles and directly related to Tusk, shows that the number of respondents who are hesitant to hold the office of prime minister in the event of a possible opposition victory is around 65 percent is. I think that was the beginning of this movement, that it was realized that with such support, the chances of winning elections with such a leader are small, and also under the banner of one list. And everything that happens before our eyes would be a consequence of this.
And it’s not known at all what the odds are for this one list, because so far the gentlemen somehow don’t get along…
It seems that – if this poll was commissioned by the opposition and found to be credible, you don’t have to be a special prophet to say that from the perspective of these other formations they have to decide on one list with a man who guarantees not that they win. This is probably the whole problem, which probably no one has publicly articulated yet, but I have the luxury of being able to.
Media attacks on these smaller entities aim to force them to agree to Tusk’s leadership. But again, the leaders of the smaller parties support this study and say there is no chance of winning the election with such leadership. And we are in a vicious circle.
Would Rafał Trzaskowski have a better chance than Tusk of leading the opposition to victory in the parliamentary elections?
If we look at how he runs Warsaw, he would be moderate. We would do nothing but point out, street by street, the errors and omissions committed there. “Czajka” is probably the best example – Deputy Prime Minister Błaszczak had to call in the army to prevent the capital of the Polish state from decaying with excrement. What is there to discuss here?
These are rather such convulsive movements, no idea. However, any normal formation conducts the debate according to the program. And here it was decided in advance that the program would not be discussed. And it seems like such a dirty dance. If there are discussions about the program, then it is a substantive conversation. But in this situation we are only talking about personalities, such a conjecture. And yet, with all due respect, this is not a beauty pageant. We are talking about who will rule Poland for the next four years and make decisions on fundamental issues such as, for example, the strengthening of the Polish army.
So we live in slightly different worlds – on the one hand we: United Right, on the other hand: the constantly feuding opposition.
And if a man who sees himself as the leader of the opposition, ie Donald Tusk, throws out a program proposal, it will be something that already works – like the latest proposal from the head of the PO – the so-called “grandmother”.
It also shows how close they are to reality. Minister Maląg immediately took up the proposals that we had already implemented. It was probably an attempt to copy something that already exists, plus possibly a new element that could be added there.
However, we are not afraid of this kind of discussion, because we are defended by facts and different kinds of decisions that we have taken, which – I hope – have improved the standard of living of many Poles, despite the fact that we were hit by two disasters: covid and then the war in ukraine. I am calm about my formation, with some discussion on the agenda. And the longer this dirty dance on the opposition lasts, the clearer our victory will be in my opinion.
Would Donald Tusk or Rafał Trzaskowski, in these difficult times and in light of the challenges you mentioned, such as covid or Russian aggression against Ukraine, be willing to take responsibility for the state, for the Poles?
The point of reference, the expression of courage among men, as happened recently, is Kiev. I have the honor of representing the formation whose president and prime minister were in Kiev shortly after the outbreak of war, and the prime minister and president were there several times. I represent a party of tough guys and somehow I did not notice that any of the opposition leaders were kind enough to go to Kiev and, using their great European influence, announce help on the spot.
So I am representing a party of strong leaders for difficult times and I leave it to the readers to judge what power the opposition leaders have, who always have a lot to say here, but when it is necessary to go to Kiev, they have not somehow come together yet.
But I think they also like “strong guys” because they like to rely on “strong guys” who would lead their presidents out of the institution’s buildings.
That’s not real power in my opinion. The real strength for me was the visit to Kiev, when no one had ever made such visits. Moreover: building the Polish army, building the Polish economy. This is a sign of strength for me, that’s why I can talk about my leaders with pride and real manly satisfaction. On the other hand, however, with all due respect, I don’t see strong male authorities.
Thank you very much for the interview.
