“I do not believe that Civic Platform, if it wins the elections, will provide Poles with any help in these difficult times. Why? Because these so-called “elites” have those people for nothing. They feel like an aristocracy that does not respect the common man. And such an attitude does not speak well of these politicians,” Anna Milczanowska, MP from the Law and Justice party, deputy chairman of the Sejm Justice and Human Rights Committee, told the wPolityce.pl portal.
wPolityce.pl: Do you think it is possible that the leader of the Civic Platform, Donald Tusk, will be replaced by the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, as the candidate of the Civic Coalition for Prime Minister?
Anna Milczanowska: Mention again? We already had it in 2020, when there were elections for the President of the Republic of Poland. We remember when the PO fielded the Deputy Marshal of the Sejm, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, and the ratings were so low that we started blocking correspondence elections.
There was a lot of hype around it, manipulated, lying. And all because their candidate had very little support in the polls. So she was replaced by Rafał Trzaskowski. It seems that the platform is getting ready for such a change again. This is a typical move of the Platform. Whenever something goes wrong – and we can see that Mr. Donald Tusk’s activities are not producing the intended results. On the contrary, the ratings in the polls are getting lower and lower, while Mr. Tusk himself uses lies, because one day he says something different, the next day he changes his mind again, as if he has a split personality. And the Poles see it, they observe politics and remember the reign of Donald Tusk, hence his declining ratings.
As for Mr. Rafał Trzaskowski, well… We can see what kind of mayor of Warsaw he is. This presidency practically does not exist, Mr. Trzaskowski has practically nothing to brag about, he has done almost nothing that could satisfy the Varsovians. Although I am not a Varsovian myself, when I come to the Sejm sessions I travel by taxi or other means of transport, and I also know from conversations with the inhabitants of the capital how they complain about dug up streets and many sick people. – considered investments in roads. And now the municipal waste scandal, involving representatives of Civic Platform, in such a rather criminal way.
But in the presidential election in 2020, Rafał Trzaskowski probably did quite well?
He did indeed well. It should be remembered that at that time there was a real “popular uprising” of the entire opposition. Entirely – that is, different political parties against President Andrzej Duda.
Poland is politically polarized. Today we can see what other political groups are doing, they are also joining this narrative: “everyone is against PiS and that PiS should lose the election.”
They do not look at how much we have achieved in these eight years and how credibly we have been able to form a government. How much good has been done for Poland, for Polish families, through social programs, how much Poland has developed economically. Also in terms of security – this applies not only to our activities for the security of Poland, but recently, after Russia’s beastly attack on Ukraine, Poland is the number 1 country in Europe, the main “hub” of aid for Ukraine .
And our position in the international arena is also growing?
Despite all these factors, such as the energy crisis caused by the Kremlin’s blackmail or the war in Ukraine, we are doing well. We are also tackling inflation by helping the Poles by reducing VAT to zero – and you can’t go lower than that, but also by introducing protective shields so as not to empty the pockets of Polish families. Poland is economically on track, rating agencies give us very high ratings.
And the opposition is trying to throw it all away by giving our country’s sovereignty to foreign states. After all, we know that there is such a relationship between PO and Germany. Donald Tusk became the head of the Council of Europe to continue only this policy and no other. When he left this position after two terms, he heard from the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, that he would return to Brussels – as the head of the future Polish government. It consists of many factors and I say this with such a warning to the Poles – either we want to live in a prosperous, sovereign, internationally important country, where the Polish raison d’être counts, or we will – as before – under the rule of PO -PSL, such a “footstool” for many countries of the European Union.
It is also worth noting that the main TV stations – for example, in France – for a long time showed the question on the strip: “Will Poland become the leader of Europe?”. Yes, Poland can be the leader of Europe, and the opposition should look at that. And they know, these politicians, that we have a chance. So it’s worth it if she wants to help because in many matters we can rise above division and do much good in many areas.
As the MP said – United Right rule, especially the current term, fell on difficult times – pandemic, war, energy crisis, inflation… Responsible leaders are needed in such circumstances. Would Donald Tusk or Rafał Trzaskowski be ready to take responsibility for the fate of the Poles?
NO. Let me remind you that Poland, for example, also had a crisis in 2008-2009. There was massive unemployment at the time. For 9 years I was a member of the local government, the president of the city of Radomsko. From that time I remember how much unemployment the city had to contend with for years. There were also problems getting external funds – although I had a very good team with people who were well prepared in terms of content, it was difficult to get these funds. We earned them, we did everything, worked day and night. There was also a crisis then, but there was no help for the Poles. The rulers did not care what happened in Polish families.
Besides, there was never any money for anything. These famous words “there is no money and there will be none” uttered by former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Mr Rostowski still ring in our ears. To this day, we hear criticism of our social programs, for example, we hear that they are giving away.
No, investing in Polish families is not giving away. This money remains on the Polish market, supplies domestic entrepreneurs, our Polish shops, so we cannot speak of “giveaways”. Meanwhile, the Platform is trying to bid with us on some programs in a very populist way. However, we calculated it all, developed with many experts. An example could be a proposal for a housing program, for example.
Competing with the proposals recently presented by Donald Tusk?
Yes, in these few things we have not quite succeeded in the past, but now this proposal with a loan of 2%, without co-payment, the possibility to build housing without a permit. So we have a lot to offer young people so that they can actually afford their own dream apartment. We also have social housing initiatives, which many local governments have already joined.
That is why I do not believe that Civic Platform, if it wins the elections, will provide Poles with any help in these difficult times. Why? Because these so-called “elites” have those people for nothing. They feel like an aristocracy that does not respect the common man. And that attitude does not bode well for these politicians.
Thank you very much for the interview.
