“We also need to make people aware that, for example, the fall in prices, which is attributed to imports from Ukraine, is not the main reason after all. We are facing a decline in global markets,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Henryk Kowalczyk, told the wPolityce.pl portal.
“Round table on grain
Tomorrow afternoon there will be a “round table” on the situation on the grain market. The meeting is attended by the leader of AgroUnion Michał Kołodziejczak. The opposition, led by Donald Tusk, accuses the government of negligence and the PSL recently tabled a motion to remove Deputy Prime Minister Henryk Kowalczyk from the position of Agriculture Minister.
PLN 600 million for subsidies for farmers
We ask Deputy Prime Minister Henryk Kowalczyk about the details of tomorrow’s meeting and how he plans to solve the grain crisis. As he announced, he “invites everyone” to Warsaw.
Especially since I’m also waiting for suggestions
– says the head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
When it comes to the grain problem, the first point is the decision of the European Commission – the PLN 600 million for subsidies
emphasizes the minister.
Deputy Prime Minister Kowalczyk also announced on social media yesterday the approval of Poland’s support program for farmers injured in connection with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
Second – I also want to discuss with farmers another possible aid, already from this crisis reserve
he adds.
There is a prospect of adopting a crisis reserve in the EU, but there are no mechanisms yet and I would like to discuss these mechanisms with farmers
– indicates.
The third phase is these technical solutions and of course further ways to close the border
he makes clear.
The last thing that would take place in the European forum would be to initiate a discussion on the decision of the EC on a possible extension or non-renewal or extension under certain conditions of duty-free imports
our interlocutor completes.
An end to the crisis at Easter?
Will all these things be done by Easter? This is what PO leader Donald Tusk is demanding.
Implementation of some mechanisms – yes, but the solution of problems itself – no
– replies Deputy Prime Minister Kowalczyk.
It’s all a matter of developing mechanisms, increasing exports, compensating for price falls – those are the main tasks. Others require sealing the border
– underlined.
“We will try to do what is possible.”
Could the grain crisis lead to an increase in anti-Ukrainian resentment among farmers?
It can cause such a situation, so we also have to make people aware that, for example, the fall in prices, which imports from Ukraine are attributed to, is not the main reason after all. We are experiencing a decline in global markets
– Deputy Prime Minister Kowalczyk tells us.
The question is whether the situation on the grain market will be brought under control until the end of the war.
It will probably be difficult until the war is over. For the time being, we will try to do what is possible at the moment and, of course, also act in the European forum
he answers.
When asked if he is not afraid of his profession, he says:
My appeal is in the hands of all Members, and the crisis we face is not a matter of my resignation or not. As the parliamentary club decides, so be it.
