Oleksandr Merezhko, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, stabbed the Civic Platform politician again. The deputy reacted bitterly to Tomasz Siemoniak’s earlier statement on Ukraine and NATO.
Siemoniak on Ukraine and NATO
Why should Ukraine be a member of NATO and should we start such talks now? These questions were answered on March 2, 2022 (i.e. shortly after the Russian aggression in Ukraine) on Radio Wrocław by Tomasz Siemoniak. The deputy chairman of the PO (formerly Minister of National Defense during this party’s rule) stated that “this should not be on the table during the war”.
Ukraine must be given all the support. It is very important what is happening with regard to the road from Ukraine to the European Union. Here I would bet a lot on trading in a non-standard and very fast way
– said Siemoniak over a year ago.
As far as NATO is concerned, Ukraine is at war. For years, Ukraine had no political consensus on whether to join NATO or aspire to join NATO. So, with all the support for Ukraine that the Alliance provides, I wouldn’t open this topic at this point. For Putin, this is one of the reasons for this war
– added.
We cannot close the door to NATO on anyone, the open door policy is one of NATO’s trademarks, we used it ourselves in 1999. Today, however, it is necessary to ensure that no people die, that diplomats start talking and that Ukraine is saved. The announcement that it is joining NATO, apart from sounding impressive in the media for half an hour, will not change the situation
– said the deputy chairman of PO, emphasizing in another excerpt that “I was a minister, I was often in Ukraine, before and after Maidan I spoke with Ukrainian politicians.”
“Mock friends are looking for different pretexts
He found excerpts of this statement on the internet and deleted it along with the comment Oleksandr Merezhko, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. This is the same MP who recently reprimanded Siemoniak for attacking Ambassador Bartosz Cichocki.
WATCH THE DETAILS: Siemoniak attacks Ambassador Cichocki. Head of the Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Committee: It is sad that there are still politicians like you in Poland
How did the Ukrainian deputy react to the words of the deputy head of the PO?
Real friends of Ukraine want Ukraine to join NATO as soon as possible, while fake friends look for various pretexts to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO. The issue of Ukraine’s membership in NATO is a litmus test of sincerity
– said Merezhko in bitter words for PO and Siemoniak himself.
So whose side is Civic Platform actually on?
