The barbed wire fence has so far been built on a stretch of about 107 km, i.e. more than half of the Polish-Russian border, the Warmińsko-Mazurska border guard told PAP on Thursday. Last year there were 11 cases of illegal crossing of the so-called green border from Russia to Poland for migration purposes.
The spokeswoman for the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Border Guard Unit, Major Mirosława Aleksandrowicz, said construction of the barbed wire barrier is currently underway on most parts of the border guard posts along the border with Russia.
In total, approximately 107 km of this dam has already been built
she added.
Safety halfway
This means that the concertina dam has so far been built over half of the land border with the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation, which is about 198 km long.
The dam on the Polish-Russian border has been built by the army since early November last year at the request of the border guard. It is 2.5 meters high and 3 meters wide. It consists of three rows of barbed wire strung on metal posts driven into the ground. A game protection net has been installed in front of the wire barrier.
In turn, in the first half of April – as reported by the Border Guard – installation work on the electronic firewall will begin. It will be a system of sensors and cameras that will allow the border to be monitored 24 hours a day, regardless of the weather, without having to stay on the border.
The electronic barrier will cover the entire land border with Russia, except for the section of the Vistula Spit, where the border has been protected by electronic devices for several years.
On the border with Russia
According to the Border Guard, there were 11 cases of illegal crossing of the so-called green border from Russia to Poland last year for migration purposes. There were also instances of people entering the stretch of the border road, mainly by tourists who wanted to take commemorative photos at the border post. There is a fine of PLN 500 for entering the border strip.
This year we registered one case of illegal border crossing from Russia to Poland
Major Aleksandrowicz added.
On the border with Belarus
On Wednesday, 98 migrants tried to get illegally from Belarus to Poland – this is how the border guard summarized the last day at the Polish-Belarusian border on Thursday. Three other people were also detained for assisting in the illegal border crossing.
The border guard said detainees included 26 Yemenis, 19 Afghans, 17 Syrians, four Somali migrants, an Egyptian and a Chadian.
Detentions of people transporting migrants took place in the area of operations of border guard posts in Narewka and Mielnik. In the first case, two Georgians were detained who were transporting four Iraqis, in the second case a Ukrainian who was transporting four Yemenis.
More than 1.5 thousand cases have been recorded since the beginning of March, according to border guard data. attempts to illegally cross the border from Belarus into Poland. In February there were about 1.5 thousand. attempts, more than 1.4 thousand in January.
Currently, the rules for the border strip are in force in Podlaskie, and the restrictions are regulated by the regulation of the voivode issued in September 2021 on the prohibition to stay on the entire part of the border strip on the border with Belarus, ie on the external border of the EU. According to the definition of the State Border Protection Act, a strip of a border road is an area 15 meters wide inland from the state border or from the bank of the border water or the coast.
The border guard informs
The current ban does not apply to owners of land located along the border road, marked tourist trails and bathing areas. The area is marked with “Grensbaan – no entry” signs.
The construction of an electronic firewall on the Polish-Belarusian border, ie a system of cameras and sensors, is being completed. It complements the 5.5 m high steel dam built last year 186 km from the border.
Ultimately, the electronic dam will be just over 200 km long. 10 of the 11 sections of this barrier are finished. It currently operates at 181 km. The last, almost 25 kilometers long stretch, near Narewka and Białowieża, is still being worked on.
In Podlaskie, all border crossings with Belarus are closed until further notice. Only railway crossings in Kuźnica and Siemianówka are open.
