“Poland has the chance to take advantage of its moment on the international arena and become the voice of those countries that do not dream of making the strongest decisions about the future of the Union, writes Michał Szułdrzyński in Rzeczpospolita.
Morawiecki replied Macron and Scholz?
The deputy editor of “Rzeczpospolita” points out that the German media interpret Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s lecture at the University of Heidelberg as “a reaction to the outline of the vision of the future of Europe presented by the leaders of France and Germany”:
Let us not forget that in his speech at the Sorbonne, French President Emmanuel Macron called for a tightening of European integration around the eurozone. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during a lecture at the university in Prague, presented the idea of a major expansion of the Community, including across Ukraine. The condition is a thorough reform of the EU, including, for example, deviation from the unanimity rule on foreign and security affairs.
“It is undoubtedly a good idea for Poland to take a stand in the discussion about the future of Europe.”
Plans for further federalization of the Community and the abolition of the right of veto are met with opposition from the Polish authorities, as Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has expressly stated in Heidelberg.
Replying directly to Scholz, Morawiecki rejected further federalization and the abolition of the veto, claiming that the Union could expand to 35 countries and continue to operate efficiently if only it stopped constantly expanding its powers. Here Morawiecki set out the credo of the Group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) (…): a return to the principle of subsidiarity in Europe, a Union firmly founded on nation states and the roots of the Community, namely Christianity, Greek and Roman civilization, the great role of freedom, solidarity and family. He warned that a centralized EU could repeat the mistakes of the past when Gerhard Schroeder made Germany, and thus the EU, dependent on Russia
– says Michał Szuldrzyński.
It was undoubtedly a good idea for Poland to take a stand in the discussion about the future of Europe
— emphasizes the columnist, noting that the German media, although critical of the PiS government, has noticed that Poland’s voice is now being heard more in the context of aid to Ukraine.
“Morawiecki said aloud what is said in many capitals.
Michał Szułdrzyński points out that during his speech at Heidelberg University, the Polish Prime Minister could refer to values that will appeal to listeners from Central and Eastern Europe, as well as values that will be well received by Western Europeans.
It also seems significant that when Morawiecki expressed his opposition to the deviation from the unanimity rule promoted by Berlin, Morawiecki said aloud what is being said in many capitals, not just those ruled by PiS’s political allies, such as Prague or Rome.
– writes the deputy editor-in-chief of Rzeczpospolita.
If it’s not just about domestic policies and playing off Jarosław Kaczyński’s anti-German idiosyncrasies, Poland has a chance to seize its moment on the international arena and become the voice of those countries that don’t dream of making the strongest decisions. take on the future of the union.
he adds.
Szłdrzyński concludes that it is worth paying attention to whether other capitals react to the speech by the head of the Polish government.
