If the situation happened in Poland from France, the European Commission would threaten us with a finger the next day and the European Parliament would organize a debate and pass a resolution calling on us to change the constitution, PiS MEP Kosma Złotowski told PAP . about the recent actions of President Emmanuel Macron, who decided to implement the pension reform outside parliament.
Emmanuel Macron’s decision to bypass parliament in making such an important decision sparked outrage in France. Retirement age is not only an economic issue, but also one of sensitivity and social responsibility. If there is no solid majority in the National Assembly to pass this bill, it means that there is no majority in French society either.
Zlotowski points out.
He stipulates that the French president has legal instruments to break this kind of resistance, but that the protests that break out could cost him dearly.
An executive fearing a parliament in which it should theoretically have a stable majority is a very rare sight
– judges.
Double EU standards
The mere fact that the French Constitution provides for such legal tricks is not a problem for the European Union. Member States are entitled to a democratic system that they have adopted themselves and Brussels has nothing to do with how it works. Another problem is the double standard that prevails in the EU, of which Poland has repeatedly fallen victim. If a similar situation happened in our country, the European Commission would probably threaten us with a finger the next day, and the European Parliament organized a debate and passed a resolution calling on us to change the constitution
– ironically the MEP.
The government’s pension reform is mainly based on an increase in the retirement age from 62 to 64 years. The government of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne decided to implement it using Art. 49.3 of the constitution, which allowed the legislative process to bypass the vote in the National Assembly, the lower house of the French parliament.
Trade unions have announced mass demonstrations and strikes for Thursday, which have been taking place in France since last week.
