In defense of the Polish forests
The resolution added that the Council of Ministers is convinced that the functioning of “multifunctional sustainable forest management” in Poland, in combination with wooden constructions and the production of other wooden products, is a way to preserve and enrich biodiversity, has a positive impact on the climate, and at the same time have a significant impact on the economic development of the Republic of Poland”.
It was stressed that under the existing provisions of the Treaty on European Union and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, the EU does not have a common forestry policy and that forestry remains a national competence.
Therefore, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Poland indicates that the consequences of the European Commission’s actions aimed at sharing competences in the field of forest management may have a negative impact on Polish forests

Opposition arose among ruling party politicians and foresters to the proposal to transfer forestry from national competences to common EU competences. In January this year, the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety delivered a positive opinion on the amendment to the treaties, which would transfer forestry from national competence to the so-called competences shared between the EU and the Member States. Amendments to the treaties require the unanimous consent of all EU countries.
