Poland supports Ukraine so strongly because we know Russia very well. We can also contribute to Hungary’s independence from Russian energy sources, said the Polish Ambassador to Budapest, Sebastian Kęciek, who gave a lecture at the Hungarian National University of Public Service (Ludovika) as part of the Ludovika Ambassadors’ Forum.
Kęciek began by recalling the words of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who said at Heidelberg University in Germany: “Millions of young Europeans living behind the Iron Curtain knew that there was freedom on one side and Russian colonialism on the other. . Sovereignty for some, imperial domination for others. On the one hand, the desired free Europe. On the other – barbaric totalitarianism. Life under the heel of Soviet Russia.
The ambassador commented to the Hungarian public that “on February 24, 2022, we woke up to a new reality that we must face, to which we must subordinate our actions and goals.” He also added that “it should come as no surprise to anyone in this room that one of the main directions of Polish foreign policy is to help Ukraine.”
I think Hungarians also know Russia
– remarked Kęciek, recalling the bloody suppression of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
“Armed aggression against Ukraine is the result of Putin’s imperial aspirations
The Polish ambassador presented the successive stages of Russia’s aggressive policy, which eventually led to the invasion of Ukraine.
Armed aggression against Ukraine is the result of Putin’s imperial pursuits, which will not end with Ukraine itself, just as it did not end with Georgia fifteen years ago
said the diplomat.
He also drew attention to energy security in the context of the war in Ukraine, a major problem for Hungary, which is dependent on Russian raw material supplies. He recalled the construction of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline, the importation of LNG and the construction of new interstate gas connections in the region, which could also contribute to the diversification of supplies to Hungary.
Despite the differences arising from our countries’ different positions on the approach to the war in Ukraine, Polish diplomacy is pursuing an active policy, presenting not only our approach to the security of the entire region, but above all convincing Hungary actively participate in activities that diversify Hungarian energy resources
– said the Polish ambassador to PAP after the lecture.
We present the opportunities that cooperation with Poland can bring in terms of connections already built, but also participation in planned investments, including the FRSU terminal in the Gulf of Gdańsk
– added the Polish diplomat.
Hungarian sine wave
We value Hungary as a country close to us, strategically in the sense of changing Europe. But that was not always the case. The political cooperation between Poland and Hungary can be described as a sine wave, which, despite some setbacks, can always come back on top. We are waiting for a new opening
said the Polish ambassador during the lecture.
The discussion that took place after the ambassador’s lecture was attended by the former Hungarian ambassador to Poland, Ivan Gyurcsik, and the historian and Polish scholar Miklos Mitrovits. The event was attended by diplomatic representatives of several countries.
The Ludovika Ambassadors’ Forum, organized by the National University of Public Service in Budapest, is a platform for the heads of missions of different countries to present in Budapest the policies of the countries they represent.
