1,535 judges and 224 prosecutors signed a letter in defense of Judge Joanna Knobel acquitting 32 activists accused of disrupting Holy Mass. in Poznań Cathedral. Judge Jakub Iwaniec responded to their statements.
This is not only an unprecedented gesture of solidarity, but also an opportunity to be reckoned with and a signal for Zbigniew Ziobro. Lawyers from all over Poland are defending Judge Joanna Knobel. Ziobro’s friend wants to re-educate her
– thunders the journalist from “Gazeta Wyborcza” Piotr Żytnicki.

The judges were outraged by Dagmara Pawełczyk-Woicka, president of the register of the national court, asks Krzysztof Lewandowski, president of the Poznań district court, to “consider the possibility” of sending judge Joanna Knobel to “training in the field of constitutional law, including in particular the protection of worship, as provided for in art. 53 sec. 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland”.
The judges write of “an unprecedented hate campaign waged by some media – also funded by our taxes”. According to them, the campaign should be fueled by… Minister Ziobro. At the same time, they assure Judge Knobel of their support in “this difficult time for her”.
Opposition to an impartial judge
However, it is not the voice of the entire community. Judge Jakub Iwaniec objected to such practices.
A self-respecting judge will not sign such an appeal. Because it is simply not appropriate for a judge to express his ideological convictions
he wrote on Twitter.
As you can see, for much of the judiciary, which – through its representative – describes itself as an “extraordinary caste”, the rights of Catholics can be ignored. Apparently the judges who signed the letter forgot that the basis of democracy is freedom of religion and mutual respect.
