“Decisions on the transfer of MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine are made by several countries; we already have clear statements about which countries that will be,” said government spokesman Piotr Müller on Wednesday.
Polish MiGs for Ukraine
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said of the transfer of the MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine on Tuesday that “it could happen in the next four to six weeks”.
When asked at Tuesday’s press conference who, besides Poland, will be part of the coalition donating the MiG-29 and how many aircraft will be involved, a government spokesman replied that details of these decisions would be communicated in due course.
I can only confirm that these decisions are made by different countries, but it is not my job to communicate this on behalf of these countries.
Muller said.
We already have clear statements about which countries that will be, but we have agreed that they will announce these kinds of decisions on their own dates and appropriate procedures.
– added.
He noted that as the prime minister said on Tuesday, “we are ready in the coming weeks to make such a decision in several countries that have decided to take a similar step.”
Statement by the President of the Republic of Poland
President Andrzej Duda stated in an interview with CNN last Wednesday that he is willing to hand over MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine.
We are ready to deliver these planes and I am sure Ukraine will use them immediately
said the chairman. The head of the president’s office Paweł Szrot added a day later that “it will not be a large number”, and in this case Poland is ready to act as part of a wider international coalition
Poland and Latvia – perspective on European security
The government spokesman was also asked about Prime Minister Morawiecki’s meetings with the head of the Latvian government, Arturs Krisjanis Karins, and the Prime Minister of Iceland, Katrin Jakobsdottir, scheduled for Wednesday.
Müller stated that Poland and Latvia have a similar perspective when it comes to Europe’s security.
We are part of NATO’s eastern flank, which is why both Poland and Latvia have been very active in supporting Ukraine in recent months. We know very well that supporting Ukraine also guarantees our security
– he said.
NATO summit in Vilnius
He added that this was one of the main topics of discussion between government leaders and that the next one would be the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius, scheduled for July. He also noted that President Andrzej Duda plays a key role in the North Atlantic Pact talks.
In talks with the Prime Minister of Iceland, he added, bilateral relations will be discussed, but also the issue of security.
