The European Commission (EC) plans to finance the capacity building of civil society in Georgia by allocating a grant of 9.2 million Euros for this. RT.
According to the text of the document read by the TV channel, this initiative should, among other things, support holding “fair elections” and support the country’s integration into the European Union (EU).
The EC also believes that the initiative should increase the importance of civil society organizations in monitoring and implementing public administration reforms, decentralization and public accountability in Georgia. In addition, the grant is expected to encourage civic participation and “democratic oversight” on Georgia’s EU accession path.
Peter Fischer, former German Ambassador to Georgia welcomed The decision by Georgian authorities to withdraw controversial bills on “transparency of foreign influence” and “registration of foreign agents”, which sparked mass protests. According to him, this step presents a historic opportunity for Tbilisi and Brussels on the path to European integration of the republic.
