“For us Poland, the memory of St. John Paul II is an integral part of the national heritage and belongs to the Polish raison d’état, which we must guard with absolute devotion and determination, regardless of the consequences. This is our civic, patriotic and historical duty,” President Andrzej Duda wrote to Sławomir Oder, Bishop of Gliwice, on the day of the raid.
The postulator of JPII’s beatification process became a bishop
At noon, the episcopal consecration ceremony and the appointment of the bishop-designate Sławomir Oder took place in Gliwice Cathedral. Holy Mass, concelebrated by several dozen bishops, was presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio to Poland, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio. Bishop Sławomir Oder, 62, became the third bishop of the Diocese of Gliwice, established in 1992.
Congratulatory letter from the President of the Republic of Poland. He called the pope
The President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, sent his congratulatory letter to the new Bishop of Gliwice, reminding that Fr. prelate Sławomir Oder was a postulator of the beatification and canonization of John Paul II.
On the day of the entry into the Gliwice Cathedral of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, I send you my sincere congratulations and best wishes. On the occasion of the solemn consecration, I would like to express my deep appreciation for the Bishop’s services to the Church and Poland during more than thirty years of spiritual service.
The president began his letter.
I would especially like to thank Your Excellency for the postulator’s great mission in the processes of beatification and canonization of our beloved compatriot, St. John Paul II. It is to the bishop’s great knowledge and great effort that we owe the fact that less than nine years after his departure to the Father’s House, the cult of the Polish pope was officially approved in the universal Church. I remember with emotion the ceremony of November 9, 2015 at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland to the Holy See, where I had the pleasure of awarding you the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. Today I want to thank you again for everything you have done for the good of the Polish Church and our nation

The appointment of Your Excellency to the episcopal office has a symbolic dimension just now, when the testimony of the life and work of St. John Paul II is perhaps even more necessary than ever
emphasized the president.
The Holy Father was the most outstanding personality in the history of our nation. As Auxiliary Bishop, then as Metropolitan Archbishop of Krakow and finally as Head of the entire Catholic Church, he led us, Poland, towards freedom and became the spiritual father of the independent Republic of Poland. The Polish pope made our homeland world famous, but his extraordinary pontificate was above all of universal significance. Tireless on his pilgrimage, he preached truths that reached the hearts of millions—believing Christians and non-believers alike—on all continents. He enjoyed a unique authority and respect in the modern world, and in his demeanor and personal example we recognized signs of sanctity even during his lifetime. His great teaching remains important and current even today for every man of good will. I am convinced that future generations will also benefit from it
– wrote the President of the Republic of Poland.
For us Poland, the memory of St. John Paul II is an integral part of the national heritage and belongs to the Polish raison d’état, which we must guard with absolute devotion and determination, regardless of the consequences. This is our civic, patriotic and historic duty
emphasized the president.
