“First of all, the senatorial pact was not only concluded to be successful, but it is also a form of compensation for these opposition parties, especially for PO,” said sociologist Prof. Henryk Domański in Telewizja wPolsce.pl’s “Hot Questions” program.
Prof. In an interview with Aleksandra Jakubowska, Domański noted that the opposition’s conclusion of the “Senate Pact” stems more from a desire to minimize the losses the opposition may incur in a clash with the United Right in the Sejm elections.
First of all, the Senate pact was not only made to be successful, but it is a form of compensation for the opposition parties, especially for the PO, who do not govern, but today have a share in the government, which was not the case in the previous term . Making such a pact could be a motivating factor to make a similar pact in the Sejm. Second, it is a signal to society that it is possible to win against PiS and they probably attribute this role to the Senate
– said Prof. Hendrik Domanski.
An important factor in the success of the Senate Pact is having more choice, and that has a mobilizing effect. The second factor – counteracting – is that the remaining coalition partners will no longer be as involved with a candidate from a different formation. This is a factor that may not have been there in 2019, and now partisan interests are coming into play a lot more. PSL, Links and Poland 2050 aren’t as keen on beating PiS as they are on Civic Platform, and they won’t be as involved in the Senate Pact
– added.
“No program needed here”
The sociologist drew attention to the issue of the political program in the context of elections in the single-mandate senate electoral law. According to him, the election program in this case is not as important as the right choice of candidates, their character and will characteristics. This situation means that no one expects a specific program from the opposition “Senate Pact”.
This must take into account a completely different electoral law than in the elections for the Sejm. The program is not an argument here – not having a program is not a failing of Civic Platform, in fact it may be their only success. No program is needed here, the person of the candidate counts
said Domanski.
Aleksandra Jakubowska’s guest judged that most likely no one would prevent both opposing political camps from running for the Senate, but the start of local election commissions, in the context of single-mandate electoral law, could create complications in gaining a clear advantage in the House.
In the case of senate elections, such local one-person committees may operate. However, whether this will neutralize the advantage of one side or the other is an open question. The third force factor will work in favor of the United Right, because when a neutral candidate enters the Senate, it is unknown who he would support
he assessed.
Will the Confederacy get in the way again?
In the parliamentary elections in 2019, a certain number of United Right votes were won by the Confederation. Perhaps this also affected the advantage of the PO and its acolytes in the Senate. An important question is whether the Confederacy can confuse the ruling party again.
At this point, the Confederacy probably has less chance, because society’s attitude towards it has changed. She is now associated more negatively because of her attitude towards Russia. There will be no other force in this collision.
– summed up Prof. Domanski.
