The Secretary General of NATO will end his term of office on September 30, 2023, which has already been extended by an extraordinary one year. In the list of names to replace it, there are m.in. the British defense minister, the president of Romania, the prime minister of Lithuania and a Pole. Witold Jurasz writes in Onet about the necessity of Aleksander Kwaśniewski’s candidacy to represent Poland and our entire region.
The reality of the war in Ukraine causes the world’s interest and the most serious challenges facing the leaders of Western countries to accumulate in the region of Central and Eastern Europe. The person who holds the office of Secretary General of NATO must always have the support of the United States and the strongest countries in the alliance, such as Britain and Germany. In this context, it is speculated that it would be worthwhile appointing a politician from Eastern Europe who would have the support and confidence of the key players in the Alliance.
The story of “government isolation” continues…
(All this – editor’s note) de facto excludes all active Polish politicians from the right-wing camp who have bad or at least damaged relations with European partners due to non-diplomatic statements
– claims Witold Jurasz in the lyrics of “Onet”.
The former diplomat and journalist confirms the opposition’s narrative to Polish authorities that they are isolated in the international arena and do not enjoy the respect and support of their Western partners. All this, of course, is said in the same breath shortly after Joe Biden’s visit to Poland, as well as the heads of the “Bucharest Nine” countries in Warsaw.
Even worse, our politicians also do not have high ratings in Washington, which, although it values Polish policy towards Ukraine, has not forgotten, for example, Andrzej Duda’s offensive behavior towards President Biden after his election victory. The White House is also not sure whether Duda – in efforts to end the war in Ukraine diplomatically – would not be an obstacle to such a scenario
he adds.
The fact that in a situation where a candidate from the east of the pact is sought and Poland represents the greatest military potential on NATO’s eastern flank and has provided enormous aid, including military aid, to Ukraine, no Polish candidate nevertheless ever turns up the list of names is a measure of our diplomatic weakness
he makes clear.
Eternal candidate
In the article in Onet, Witold Jurasz successively analyzes candidates for Stoltenberg’s successor from many countries, including Poland. According to him, the best candidate from our country would be former president Aleksander Kwasniewski. It is worth adding that Kwasniewski’s candidacy for various international positions has been discussed for some twenty years – with the same result.
In an interview with Onet, three ambassadors from NATO countries mentioned Aleksander Kwaśniewski when asked if there was a politician who could get their country’s support.
Jura says.
Public opinion is under no illusions
The news in Onet was quickly picked up by politicians, pundits and internet users who, judging by most entries, do not have much hope that Aleksander Kwaśniewski could become NATO Secretary General.
Yes. President A. Kwasniewski would have a huge, almost 100% chance of becoming Secretary General of NATO. Let’s push PiS for the government to submit its candidacy. RT Who will be NATO’s new Secretary General? Onet: Only one Pole with a chance
– wrote General Stanisław Koziej.
Onet writes that Aleksander Kwaśniewski is the only Pole who has a chance to become Secretary General of NATO…⤵️
– added Senator Marek Pęk.
It is impossible to be sure whether Aleksander Kwasniewski is really being discussed in the diplomatic corridors in the context of the management of the NATO alliance, or whether he is the umpteenth creation of his own hopes and dreams by the Polish liberal left. elites. Let us add that many years after the end of his term as President of the Republic of Poland in 2005, Aleksander Kwaśniewski was considered a sure candidate for NATO, UN and EU membership. Perhaps the nimbus of freedom of choice most clearly attributed to Kwasniewski in Poland is not shared by our Western partners.
