Poland submitted a request to Member States’ ambassadors to the EU, Sherpas (advisors to presidents and heads of government of EU countries), the European Commission and the European Council for the immediate imposition of sanctions against Belarus in connection with the sentences handed down Ales Byalyatski and other Belarusian oppositionists, according to PAP sources.
According to PAP information, Poland has called for the fastest possible response in the form of a package of EU sanctions for the deplorable actions of the Belarusian regime.
This information was confirmed in an interview with PAP by Poland’s Permanent Representative to the EU, Andrzej Sadoś, who submitted the application on behalf of Poland.
In early January, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the imposition of sanctions on Belarus, but that has not happened since.
The Swedish Presidency of the EU is not active in this matter
one of the EU diplomats told PAP.
Bialacki sentenced to 10 years in a penal colony
Byalyatski, a Belarusian human rights defender, founder of the human rights center Viasna and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize last year, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a court in Minsk on Friday. Three other activists, associates of Bialiatski, were sentenced to seven to nine years in prison.
The verdict was announced by the center of Wiasna, quoted by independent media.
The convicts had already been recognized as prisoners of conscience and the criminal case against Wiasna as politically motivated.
