Currently, there are no clear recommendations in Poland to ban the use of TikTok, Stanisław Żaryn, Government Plenipotentiary for Information Space Security of the Republic of Poland, told PAP. “We are analyzing different types of Chinese technologies or telecommunications products,” he added.
It was reported on Thursday that employees of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs cannot use the Chinese TikTok application on official devices for security reasons. Similar decisions have previously been taken in the US, Canada and the European Commission.
What about Poland? Zaryn replies
The government’s plenipotentiary for information space security, Stanisław Żaryn, was asked whether there are any recommendations in Poland regarding the use of such Chinese applications and whether this matter is being analysed.
Żaryn said that “there are currently no clear recommendations regarding banning TikTok.” At the same time, he noted that “Recommendations have been made in the past by Polish services regarding other Chinese services or technologies.”
We analyze different types of Chinese technologies or telecommunication products, we do business with companies that operate under a very specific legal regime
— noted the Government’s Commissioner for Information Space Security.
He pointed out that Chinese law requires telecommunications companies to cooperate with local services.
Thus, those technologies produced by Chinese telecommunications giants should be treated as slightly more risky than those technologies that do not have such risk baggage.
Zaryn emphasized.
In turn, in response to the PAP’s question in the context of the decision of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Ministry spokesman Łukasz Jasina said that it did not ban employees of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to TikTok.
Poland asked the EC for clarification
Government spokesman Piotr Müller said on Radio Wnet on Thursday that Poland had asked the European Commission for “information on technical aspects” justifying the decision to ban workers from using TikTok.
We await a response from the EC
Muller replied.
He added that “generally, application installation policies on work devices are restricted and do not only apply to TikTok.”
