Organizing a referendum within 100 days after the elections makes no sense – said the head of the PO club, Borys Budka, referring to the proposal of Szymon Hołownia and Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz on an abortion referendum. He stated that the KO would build a majority to resolve the matter in parliament.
Kosiniak-Kamysz and Hołownia want a referendum on abortion
PSL head Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Poland 2050 leader Szymon Hołownia on Wednesday presented their list of issues to be addressed in the next legislature, regarding the participation of both groups in the future government. The first 100 days include: restoring legal status regarding the possibility of abortion to the state before the October 2020 Constitutional Tribunal ruling and holding a referendum on this issue.
Budka: There is no time to hold referendums on the obvious
When asked on Thursday on Radio ZET whether PO would support the idea of holding such a referendum, Budka replied that he would not support this idea.
Holding a referendum within 100 days of the election makes no sense to me
he said.
We will build such a majority to solve the matter in parliament
– added the head of the KO club.
According to him, “there is no time today for referendums on obvious issues, issues of women’s freedom of choice.”
We believe that this should be dealt with in Parliament and that we are in a position to do so
Budka said.
He emphasized that PO is in favor of freedom of choice for women.
We believe that women decide much better than politicians in such matters
Budka said.
Amendment of the abortion law
As a result of the 2020 Constitutional Tribunal ruling, Polish women were prohibited from terminating a pregnancy in case of serious and irreversible fetal disorders, as well as an incurable and life-threatening illness. In Poland, abortion is currently possible in two cases: when the pregnancy poses a threat to the woman’s life or health, or when it is the result of a prohibited act (rape, incest).
The anti-abortion regulations in force in Poland since 1993 have been modified as a result of the Constitutional Court ruling of October 2020. Previously, the Law on Family Planning, Protection of the Human Fetus and Conditions of Termination of Pregnancy, known as abortion also applies in the case of serious and irreversible damage to the fetus or an incurable disease that threatens its life. This termination of pregnancy principle was declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Tribunal, sparking a wave of protests across the country. This provision expired with the publication of the judgment of the Constitutional Court in January 2021.
Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated on Wednesday that “not 460 deputies, but millions of women across Poland should decide on abortion.” He stated that “in fundamental matters it is worth appealing to the voice of the citizens.”
