On Tuesday in Brussels, during a meeting of the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament (PETI), its members discussed the report on the fact-finding visit to the Białowieża Forest on September 19-21, 2022. PiS MEP took the floor in the discussion Kosma Złotowski said that “there is no agreement with EU proposals aimed at changing the way neither Białowieża Forest nor any other forest area in Poland is managed”.
Złotowski pointed out that the report discussed should be more balanced and also take into account issues related to the needs of the local community, among others.
It is good that the visit helped to find out what the Narewka road really is, but also how many other infrastructure solutions are expected by the local community, which will help in the development and accessibility for residents and tourists of this beautiful corner of Poland
added the MEP.
As he stressed, it should be remembered that local residents have been managing the forest for centuries and their rights should also be taken into account when it comes to managing this area and its goods.
Nor can it be assumed in advance that every human intervention is bad for nature – in the case of the bark beetle (which, by the way, has long been obsolete) it was a necessary intervention
– reminded Złotowski, pointing out that the Białowieża Forest would not have had its symbol, the Białowieża bison, for a long time if it had not been for human intervention.
There is no agreement with proposals aimed at changing the way Białowieża Forest or any other forest area in Poland is managed
he stressed.
As he noted, the EU institutions are currently trying to deprive member states of the ability to decide on one of their greatest assets, which is beyond the powers of the EU.
The State Forests is an organization that has been managing Polish forest lands for almost a century – it is a tradition and part of the Polish cultural heritage. As a Member of the European Parliament from a region with such natural wonders as Bory Tucholskie or the Brda Valley, I will strive to keep their oversight in Polish hands.
– announced the Bydgoszcz politician.
