There will be provocations on the Polish-Belarusian border. It cannot be ruled out that, as in 2021, the Belarusian authorities will use migrants, said the chairman of the Belarusian House Foundation, oppositionist Aleś Zarembiuk, on Tuesday.
Is it possible to intensify the provocations on the Polish-Belarusian border – Radio RMF FM asked the head of the Belarusian House Foundation, oppositionist Alesia Zarembiuk.
Provocation repetition?
There will certainly be provocations. I do not exclude that the Belarusian authorities will try again to transfer tens of thousands of migrants in order to destabilize the situation on the border between Belarus and Poland, to divert attention from the war in Ukraine
Zarembuk replied.
According to him, there are currently still migrants in Belarus who could be used for a hybrid attack on the Polish borders, but “the number is not as large as in 2021”.
In August 2021, a group of illegal migrants was detained while trying to illegally cross the Polish-Belarusian border. In the days and weeks that followed, more and more migrants tried to reach Poland with the cooperation of Belarusian services.
According to Polish authorities, it was a hybrid attack prepared by Belarus and Russia. In August last year, the Government Plenipotentiary for Information Space Security of the Republic of Poland, Stanisław Żaryn, pointed out that the operation led by Belarus and Russia, which used the illegal migration route to destabilize the countries of NATO’s eastern flank , was still running.
Recent Border Guard reports and intelligence data prove that more foreigners are still coming to Belarus and are being used to dismantle the Polish border
he said.
He explained that “Russian-Belarusian activity against Poland is part of the hybrid war that Russia is waging against NATO countries, especially the eastern flank.”
The situation at the border
According to the border guard, 66 foreigners illegally tried to get from Belarus to Poland on Monday; near Bobrowniki (Podlaskie Voivodeship), completely different people swam and conquered the border river Świsłocz on a pontoon.
Five citizens of Cameroon swam across Świsłocz to the Polish side, and seven citizens of Syria and a Sudanese crossed this river on a pontoon, the border guard reported on Twitter on Tuesday morning. On other parts of the border, the largest group of 26 people was held near Dubicze Cerkiewne.
Since the beginning of February, there have been about 1.4 thousand. attempts to cross illegally from Belarus to Poland. 1,000 arrests in January 440 migrants who tried to enter our country illegally at this border.
Currently, the rules for the border strip are in force in Podlaskie, and the restrictions are regulated by the regulation of the voivode issued in September 2021 on the prohibition to stay on the entire part of the border strip on the border with Belarus, ie on the external border of the EU.
According to the definition of the State Border Protection Act, a strip of a border road is an area 15 meters wide inland from the state border or from the bank of the border water or the coast.
The current ban does not apply to owners of land located along the border road, marked tourist trails and bathing areas. The area is marked with “Grensbaan – no entry” signs.
The construction of an electronic firewall on the Polish-Belarusian border, ie a system of cameras and sensors, is being completed. It complements the 5.5 m high steel dam built 186 km from the border last year.
Ultimately, the electronic dam will be just over 200 km long. 10 of the 11 sections of this barrier are finished. It currently operates at 181 km. The last, almost 25 kilometers long stretch, near Narewka and Białowieża, is still being worked on.
In Podlaskie, all border crossings with Belarus are closed until further notice. Only railway crossings in Kuźnica and Siemianówka are open.
