The Warsaw authorities are pursuing a certain agenda according to which only a few can afford a car and meat. Such actions should be nipped in the bud and criticized – said MP Paweł Lisiecki at a conference in front of the capital’s town hall, referring to C40 Cities’ recommendations to counter the climate crisis.
Warsaw is registered in C40 Cities – an association that groups cities whose authorities have committed to limiting the amount of meat and dairy products eaten by the inhabitants of these cities due to climate change. Meat up to 16 kg, dairy up to 90 kg. Inhabitants of these cities would only buy eight new clothes a year by 2030. In addition, the number of flights would be limited to one return flight every two years and to 190 cars per thousand inhabitants
said Lisiecki.
Back to the past
He notes that the above goals are less ambitious goals.
More ambitious is zero meat, no dairy, no cars and only three clothes a year
– added.
He recalled that there were times when food was rationed – in the time of the People’s Republic of Poland, when ration cards were introduced.
At that time there was 3.5 kg of meat per worker. The calculations of the cities show that there would be less than 1.5 kg of meat per month. Less than during martial law
he assessed.
Lisiecki asked how Warsaw intends to achieve such ambitious goals.
Will children in schools and kindergartens receive a limited amount of animal proteins and what will they be replaced with?
– He asked.
The madness of ecology with the PO program?
He also asks if this is part of the Civic Platform’s program, or if the PO takes over, such proposals will also apply to other regions. He also wondered if Rafał Trzaskowski would set an example for Varsovians and limit his travels abroad.
Councilor Ernest Kobyliński also spoke.
Warsaw has a very big problem with waste collection and waste management. Instead, we focus on things that are funny and surreal to the average person. Let’s focus on the problems that concern Warsaw and not the assumptions that harm the inhabitants and should limit freedom and actually serve no one
he stressed.
Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski pointed out on social media that the report in question was made several years ago and was not commissioned by Warsaw nor consulted with the city.
He recalled that the city’s food policy aimed to “support residents in accessing quality and cheap food”. He pointed out that “the vast majority” of the projects submitted to the participatory budget are “ecological projects”, and in addition to investments in urban green spaces, more and more initiatives are about food and its sharing and combating food waste.
C40 was founded in 2005 by the mayors of 18 largest cities to combat the climate crisis. The current chairman is the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. In 2021, more than 1,000 local governments joined the C40 initiative to limit the rise in global average temperatures. 97 cities belong to the association, including Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Berlin, Copenhagen, Lisbon, London, Paris, Rome, Stockholm, Tel Aviv, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Montreal, New York, Washington, Johannesburg, Nairobi , Beijing, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Seoul, Tokyo and Melbourne. Warsaw has been a member of C40 since 2007.
Complaint to the CJEU
The EU wants to deprive Poland of the right to own a car – said the deputy head of the Ministry of Justice, Solidarna Polska politician Sebastian Kaleta, referring to the EU ban on the sale of combustion cars from 2035. He announced that the government would raise the issue of filing a complaint in this case with the CJEU
On 27 October 2022, the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament reached an agreement on stricter CO2 emission standards for new cars and vans. From 2035, it will not be possible to register new cars and vans with internal combustion engines in any EU Member State.
The EU wants to deprive Poles of the right to own a car, manage their own affairs, commute to work, go on vacation. We must do everything we can to prevent this ban from taking effect
– said Kaleta at Wednesday’s press conference.
According to him, cars will soon become more expensive due to tightened limits.
The deputy head of MS said that Solidarna Polska will do a lot to prevent the implementation of solutions related to combustion cars.
among other things, we will talk in the government forum so that Poland can complain to the CJEU about this, because this legal act is part of the Fit for 55 package, which significantly affects the energy sovereignty of a member state, and therefore needs to be adopted unanimously , and in this procedure it is not processed . There is a basis for submitting a complaint to the CJEU. We will propose a debate on this topic in the government forum
said Kale.
In January, Climate and Environment Minister Anna Moscow said the ban on registration of new combustion cars from 2035 was unrealistic. She added that Poland is a minority in the European Union on this issue.
