“The leaders of individual formations should be asked what their purpose is. Of course, every party has one important goal: to win the elections. A united opposition can achieve this. Moreover, if I observe the parliamentary votes, we in the opposition are practically no different. I still hope that with the passage of time and the approaching elections, perhaps there will be a broader agreement among the opposition, because unity is strength, says Marta Wcisło, a Civic Platform MP, in an interview with the wPolityce.pl- portal .
wPolityce.pl: Member of Parliament, would Donald Tusk’s taking on the position of Prime Minister have a positive impact on the lives of the majority of Poles?
Marta Wcislo: Only mother, Mr. Editor, why are you asking me this? I am an ordinary member of parliament, an ant. Party officials would probably answer this question better. I can only say that at the moment there is no discussion at all in our party about the division of any position. We really focus on matters that citizens consider important.
I understand, but I expected that you, as a member of the PO, would answer my question in the affirmative without hesitation.
For me, Donald Tusk is the absolute leader of both my party and the opposition. In my opinion, he is by all accounts the leader of the democratic opposition.
There is a famous recording online of Donald Tusk’s meeting with the people of Lublin, where you announce the arrival of the chairman with such verve. For that reason alone, I expected a positive response from you.
(laughter). I really appreciate the leader. I announced Donald Tusk with gusto at the time, because when Donald Tusk entered the room, the cheers were so loud and the applause so great that I wanted my words to be heard. As you saw, the participants of this meeting stood up and clapped. I wanted to break through the applause, greet him properly, and that’s how it came across. There was energy.
This question – “Do you think that Donald Tusk’s assumption of the office of Prime Minister would have a positive impact on the lives of the majority of Poles?” was also asked in the social change survey for the wPolityce.pl portal. The results were as follows: 52 percent. thought no, 28 percent said yes and 20 percent said no. chose the answer “hard to say”. Of course, the majority of KO voters (79 percent) answered “yes”, but there was a strong division among the voters of Poland 2050 (44 percent chose the answer yes and 27 percent no). How would you feel about that?
I approach all polls very carefully, they are extremely subjective depending on when they are taken and by which poll. Elections are the best polls. But as I said before – for me Donald Tusk is the best leader, he is my chairman, I am very happy that he has returned to Polish politics. It is known that before his return the mood towards PO was somewhat less enthusiastic than now. Now I see very positive reactions from citizens. This is, of course, my opinion and that of my party’s supporters, because if you ask the supporters of other parties, this assessment will be different. Donald Tusk is the best president and that’s all.
However, if you look at the trust rankings, such as those of the IBRiS studio presented on the Onet portal, another PO politician, Rafał Trzaskowski, is clearly better there. Recently a poll appeared in “Rzeczpospolita”, where the local government movement Yes! For Poland, to which Rafał Trzaskowski also belongs, he had no less than 10.7 percent. support. It’s a very decent result.
This is only an addition to the broad offer of the democratic opposition. Rafał Trzaskowski enjoys a lot of confidence from the Poles, probably of a slightly different age group than Donald Tusk, he is especially appreciated by younger voters and President Tusk a little older. This is in addition to the wide range for our electorate. I think it’s natural.
However, the media often publish material about the dispute, or rather the rivalry between Rafał Trzaskowski and Donald Tusk. Isn’t it all true?
I don’t see such a thing. Both Donald Tusk and Rafał Trzaskowski were present at the last KO club. We do not focus on unimportant matters, but on subjects that citizens talk about during meetings. We focus on what we want to present to our constituents. Rafał Trzaskowski is a very experienced local government official, my group absolutely cooperates with local government officials, the Yes! For Poland it is received positively. We have only one goal: to win the elections.
You say that KO focuses on proposals for voters, but also on confrontation with PiS. A PO spot recently appeared presenting an allegedly pro-Russian statement by Prime Minister Morawiecki. A longer clip revealed that the Prime Minister was simply quoting Donald Tusk’s words from years ago. The PO has already removed this video, but do you think she should also apologize?
I don’t know about this case, never heard of it. In general, there is a lot of different information in the public space that is presented subjectively, which I think is a shame. I am often in the public media, government television, and instead of discussing current issues, I get questions about the situation in 2015 or 2008, for example. I sometimes feel that these programs should be labeled as historical rather than political . Now the main thing is to pay attention to current topics.
After all, I’ll ask – have you really not heard at all about this deleted PO spot?
Not really. I am focused on the problems that are happening in the region, yesterday I had a big meeting with miners, I returned home 22. I did not see it.
President Tusk continues to promote the concept of the opposition starting elections from a single list. Marcin Kierwiński on Radio ZET answered in the affirmative whether it was Szymon Hołownia who destroyed this concept. Does the MP think so?
The leaders of individual formations should be asked what their purpose is. Of course, every party has one important goal: to win the elections. A united opposition can achieve this. Moreover, if I observe the parliamentary votes, we in the opposition are practically no different. I keep hoping that with the passage of time, the approaching elections, maybe there will be some more agreement on the opposition, because unity is strength. I will certainly not criticize any opposition group and look for what divides, and focus on what unites. This is not a question of rankings, because everyone realizes that in a broad coalition there are concessions to be made.
For example, I suspect that people who are currently trying to be KO “ones” in a certain district, and who would have to give way to politicians from Poland 2050 or PSL, if the aforementioned one list were made, would be rather – to say the least – ” They wouldn’t be too happy about that.”
However, the list consists of 28-30 people, in constituencies there are more seats to be won than one. Personally, I did not enter the Sejm from first place, and this is my first term. Everyone is aware that not only “ones” – colloquially – “take”, but also from other places you can enter the Sejm. Of course, it comes with more intensive work.
That’s true, but in general, the lower you are on the list, the less likely you are to get a ticket.
Yes, but on the other hand, a strong list increases the number of votes cast for a particular party and the number of seats won.
However, I doubt whether this is of interest to a candidate who, among other reasons, will not be allowed to enter the Sejm because of his position on such a list of a broad coalition.
I don’t know, but I really hope that pragmatism will prevail and that there will be wider agreement among the opposition. Today there is such an uncomfortable situation, individual formations are trying to isolate themselves, but I hope that with the passage of time, the bosses of individual parties will come to the conclusion that we should go together. As for me personally, I am not counting on a “one”, I do not know what place will be awarded. I’ll start with what I get. I like to fight.
