How independence is defended by the Rzeszów Monument to Revolutionary Action by local Civic Platform activists. They call the monument “Rzeszów’s most recognizable building”, a symbol of the city and “a memento of our history”. They compare the monument to “Nike – a symbol of victory, strength and speed of action”, and oo. Bernardines, who do not want the monument near them, are accused of greed and ideological stubbornness.
Monument – a tribute to communism
The case concerns the eviction of the land purchased from the city in 2006 by the monastery oo. Bernardines of the Monument to the Revolutionary Act. This monument was erected in 1974 by the authorities of the People’s Republic of Poland as a tribute to the communist system and how this system was “introduced” in Poland. The Bernardine Fathers do not identify with the idea of the monument and do not need it for anything, which is why they are trying to remove it from their area, but they do not know the best way to do it.
Attack on the “symbol of Rzeszów”
The Institute of National Remembrance favored the demolition of the monument, as it was clearly linked to the communist revolution, shortly after the enactment of the Decommissioning Act. However, the problem of the monument revived when on February 13, the marshal of the province of Podkarpackie came, Władysław Oryl (PiS) declared that the provincial government has no intention of taking over the monument from the Revolutionary Law, and PiS councilors of the regional Assembly of Podkarpacie, referring to the Decommissioning Act, proposed to demolish the monument.
The OP’s response was not long in coming.
We strongly oppose any further ideas to remove the Monument to Revolutionary Action in Rzeszów
– said Marcin Deręgowski, the head of the Rzeszów PO, in a special statement.
From the position of the local Civic Platform, we learn that the monument is not only “an established symbol of the city”, but also its “most recognizable building”.
PO: Revolutionary act as Nike – “our history”
PO activists take their position further, calling the monument a “memorial of our history” and a “first-class work of art” that may have a “timeless dimension”.
The figure of Nike in Greek mythology was the goddess of victory, strength and speed of action. This is the form of communication that we propose to give to the Rzeszów Monument
— write the PO activists without embarrassment, remembering the activities of the communists in post-war Poland.
Those greedy nuns
Also got Bernardines, who – in PO’s opinion – are not trying hard enough to take over the monument that stands in their neighborhood near the city.
Such an attitude may arouse the suspicion that it is an expression of ordinary greed or ideological stubbornness
– we read in the position of PO activists from Rzeszów.
Will the monument to the Revolutionary Act for the citizens of Rzeszów – just like for the PO in Rzeszów – be a memento of “their history”? When the monument returns to the city, will it be like Nike, as the symbol of the city and its most recognizable structure? Very doubtful.
