“The president said clearly that these measures [pieniądze z Funduszu Odbudowy – red.] belongs to Poland and has taken a courageous decision (…) The president is not afraid of bold decisions, including those that go against the political environment from which he comes” – said the head of the presidential office, Paweł Szrot, when he was asked about President Andrzej Duda’s decision on RMF FM on referral of the law on the Supreme Court to the Constitutional Court under the preventive review procedure.
Did the president – by his decision – make the “gesture of Pilate”? The KPRP minister recalled that such a claim had been made by the same opposition politicians who abstained from voting on the amendment of the Supreme Court law.
The president’s draft amendment to the law on the Supreme Court initially sparked hope in Brussels. If things had been handled differently, if the European Commission had not been given different pretexts, we might be in a different mood today
– explained Szrot, rejecting allegations that Andrzej Duda’s decisions could lead to the defeat of the United Right in the upcoming elections.
The fact that the president has temporarily raised important questions about the constitutionality of the law does not mean that he has an alliance with Zbigniew Ziobro. Mr President, moreover, stressed that a certain part of the responsibility for the fact that we are in this place and not in another place is borne by the circles of Zbigniew Ziobro
he continued.
Does the president intend to challenge the amendment to the Supreme Court law in its entirety or just some of its provisions?
Everyone knows this when drawing up and submitting the application. I don’t want to get ahead now. Mr. President spoke of certain doubts, but I repeat: the legislative process has not yet been completed. The only body that can rule on the constitutionality of the provisions of the Act is the Constitutional Tribunal
– said the head of the president’s office. As he added, he could not imagine that the Constitutional Tribunal – because of the internal dispute – would not consider the presidential application.
The matter is too serious and concerns such important interests of Poland that it should lead to some reflection, not only in terms of this body, but also in general
he stressed.
Will someone from our region succeed Stoltenberg?
In the conversation it was also asked whether Jens Stoltenberg, who will retire in the autumn, will be replaced by someone from our region.
Our region, when it comes to its importance and its involvement in the Russian aggression against Ukraine, does not have to prove anything, but it would be a measurable sign
– reviewed Pawel Szrot.
Russia sees it clearly. I am not talking about the statements of those people who will one day go down in the annals of political madness, such as Mrs Zakharova, Mr Medvedev or Mr Soloviev. There are more serious Russian analysts – although not necessarily favorable to Poland – who say that it is Poland with its allies that is in real competition for dominance in Europe
– added. He stressed – after a question from a journalist – that the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, should finish his term and not talk about specific names, as it could harm the ongoing negotiations.
Will the president convene the RCN?
Left-wing politicians asked the president on Monday to convene the National Security Council in the coming days ahead of US President Joe Biden’s visit to Poland. In their view, all groups should meet to outline Poland’s priorities in relation to this visit.
Asked on RMF FM radio about the call from left-wing politicians, Szrot pointed out that “he doesn’t know of any decisions by the president on this issue so far”.
However, I would like to remind you that the President (USA) is coming to Poland at the invitation of President Andrzej Duda, he is coming for the second time in a year. This is a completely unprecedented situation and the US government is working closely, regularly and continuously with the Polish government. I am also talking about the contacts between President Andrzej Duda and President Biden, there is no room for ideological prejudice here, no mutual grievances. This collaboration is exemplary and very, very good. And we can stick to that
Shrot said.
Mr. President has never hesitated to convene the National Security Council on important matters. He did that several times last year. If he deems such a meeting appropriate, he will not hesitate to convene one
– added the head of the President’s Office.
On Friday, February 10, the White House announced President Biden’s planned visit to Poland on February 20-22, who will meet with President Andrzej Duda and the leaders of the Bucharest Nine (which is formed by the countries of the eastern flank of NATO), and will also give a speech for the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The National Security Council is an advisory body to the President of the Republic of Poland in matters of state internal and external security. It consists of: the Marshals of the Sejm and the Senate, the Prime Minister, the Head of the Ministry of National Defence, the Head of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, the Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Minister secret service coordinates services, the heads of parliamentary or deputy club groups (or the presidents of these clubs), the head of the president’s office and the head of the National Security Bureau. The meetings of the Board are convened by the chairman, at the same time stating the subjects.
Zelensky in Warsaw?
In an interview on RMF FM, the question was also asked whether on the occasion of President Biden’s visit and the summit of the so-called During the Bucharest Nine in Warsaw, our country will also receive a visit from the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
Even if I knew, for security reasons, I wouldn’t be able to say anything here
– replied Minister Paweł Szrot.
