Former US President Bill Clinton promised to work on “close cooperation” between the two countries during a meeting with Russia’s first president, Boris Yeltsin. This is stated in a new set of declassified documents from the United States National Archives. DEA News.
Published materials include a transcript of a January 23, 1993 phone call between these politicians. According to the transcript, Yeltsin congratulated Clinton on the inauguration a few days after the ceremony.
“I am convinced that together we will create the closest possible cooperation between the United States and Russia,” said the former US leader at the time.
He also pointed out that Moscow and Washington should work together in difficult times of the Eurasian continent. In addition, Clinton announced that work should be started to make progress on START II. The presidents agreed on the first face-to-face meeting in a third country.
