Zakharova: Moscow expects Tallinn to comply with UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 19:04

Spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova statedIn Moscow, on the establishment of the territory adjacent to the Gulf of Finland by Estonia, they proceed from the fact that Tallinn will comply with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and will not prevent the passage of Russian ships.

Prior to this, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs offered the government to exercise the right to create an adjacent territory in the Gulf of Finland within 12 nautical miles from the border of the country’s territorial waters. Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsal said that this would have a positive impact on the country’s security and the environment, as well as the preservation of historical values in neighboring waters.

“Contiguous zone creation is a common practice of coastal states, but does not make it possible to control or even impede navigation, according to the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Of course, if the Estonian side acts within the legal framework,” he said.

Previously, Tallinn had no right to restrict navigation in the bay. declaration Vladimir Lipaev, Russian Ambassador to Estonia. According to the diplomat, the creation of the adjacent territory only allows additional inspections of ships, but not a ban on navigation.
