Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared a state of emergency in the country’s capital, Brasilia, until the end of January, amid unrest. It has been reported TASS.
The Order on Federal Intervention in the Capital Territory to Deter Major Disorders of Public Order will be in effect until January 31, 2023. Lula da Silva stated that during this period, federal authorities will assume the functions of managing public security agencies.
The Brazilian leader also promised to punish all vandals involved in the riots in Brazil.
According to state company Agencia Brasil, a military police helicopter is dropping tear gas grenades as well as noise and flash grenades at protesters in the capital.
Also, a battalion of presidential guards of the National Guard and army units arrived at the presidential palace. Security forces are gradually regaining control over the Federal Supreme Court and Parliament buildings.
Supporters of the former President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, who lost the election on January 8, caught congress building in the capital.
On January 1, 2023, Lula da Silva took the oath of office and became President of Brazil for the third time. According to the results of 99.01% of the votes, Lula da Silva received 50.84%, while his rival, the current president of the country, Jair Bolsonaro, received 49.16%. Bolsonaro agreed to hand over power to Lula da Silva.
